30-Second Fieldcraft: How to Shuck an Oyster

Gear

  • Oyster knife (short, blunt).
  • Glove or folded cloth, to hold the oyster and protect your hand.

Steps

  1. Cup down. Hold the oyster with the deep shell (cup) facing down, and the hinge toward you.
  2. Find the hinge. Press the knife tip into the hinge.
  3. Twist, don’t stab. Rotate the knife to pop the upper shell (lid).
  4. Slide and cut. Run the blade along the top shell to sever the adductor muscle.
  5. Lift the top shell. Throw it away.
  6. ‘Finish’ the oyster. Slide the knife under the oyster to cut the bottom muscle, then flip the meat, and leave inside the shell. Do not discard the liquor, as this will prevent the oyster from drying out and adds to the flavour.

Field Safety: Crossing Fences
  • ozfishandgame

One of the most underrated hazards a hunter may face on private property is the humble farm fence.

I know – It sounds ridiculous, right? But in our eagerness to pursue game species on the other side, it’s easy to overlook basic firearms safety. That lapse can put both ourselves and others at serious risk.

This article highlights the importance of firearms safety when crossing a fence and outlines how to navigate this obstacle the right way.

Two Classes of Australians: Culture-Based Discrimination and Government Hypocrisy

Politicians claim to place equal value on each of their constituents, regardless of where they come from or who they are. In reality, they pick and choose who to discriminate against, guided by political optics and personal agendas. Their most common targets are hunters, anglers, and law-abiding firearm owners.

In this article, I outline the prevalence of culture-based discrimination in Australia and question why our recreational pursuits are constantly threatened with extinction—despite having deep roots in every corner of our multicultural society.
